Going Natural: Why You NEED to Switch to a Natural Deodorant

I have decided to embark on a new adventure here at Fit Happy Soul, and that is to go natural. I never thought I would be “that person”, but as natural and organic products are becoming more widely available, and more research is being uncovered–why wouldn’t you want to go natural?

Join me in this brand new series of Going Natural.

I will be posting weekly the small changes I am making to be go back to the basics and simplicity of the Earth itself for a happier and healthier me! I hope that this will inspire you to make the switch to more natural products in your everyday life.

The Scoop On Deodorant

I have always been weary of the negative effects of deodorant. My fiancé works in an old folks home, and tells me stories about all of the older women who have Alzheimer’s and they believe they can trace it back to the use of deodorant, especially after shaving. Studies have also shown using deodorant can increase the risk of causing breast cancer.

What really struck me was when I saw a girl on social media did some therapeutic cupping. A type of massage therapy believed to release toxins in the body (Look it up!). The more red and purple the circles are, this shows areas of higher toxins that are trying to leave the body. Her darkest circles were right by her armpits and she mentioned this was probably because her deodorant. This lead me to do some investigating…

How many of you shave your armpits, come out of the shower, and put a fresh coat of deodorant over those squeaky clean pits just to have a painful burning sensation? Shaving creates small cuts in the skin, so when you put deodorant over these fresh cuts, the deodorant gets quickly absorbed into the skin and the bloodstream in a matter of seconds. In fact, even when there AREN’T those little cuts, it still absorbs into the skin.

Do your armpits get brown spots? Feel bumpy? This could be from being so irritated because of all the toxins you are absorbing. Clogging up your pores with regular deodorant prevents your pores from naturally sweating out the toxins your body produces. So on top of ABSORBING toxins, now your body can’t get rid of the toxins it’s producing.

Standard drugstore deodorant has many scary ingredients that should NOT be absorbed into the skin. Things like:

How to Have Happy Armpits

Upon even MORE research, I found the BEST and most SIMPLE method to make your armpits healthy and happy is to first: Use a charcoal mask on your armpits. You heard me right.

Charcoal masks are known for their ability to pull toxins from the skin. Make sure you get an all natural charcoal mask and apply to the armpits and allow for the mask to dry. You’ll have to hold your arms up for a little while for this one!

Hop in the shower and rinse off. Your armpits should most definitely feel fresh and clean!

Step two is to buy a natural deodorant.

UPDATE: Hate doing the research? Check out this great resource at Reviews.com about the best deodorant to buy! I discovered that while Tom’s of Maine deodorant is still pretty natural–it has misleading advertisement about aluminum NOT being in the product. This resource was super helpful–check it out to find out which natural deodorant will be best for you!

I purchased one at Walmart called Tom’s of Maine. This brand is known for having a TON of natural health and beauty products. It’s a bit hard to find, as it’s on the bottom shelf out of the way (go figure, right?) . A huge perk is that it is pretty inexpensive for only about $4-5.

What’s great about this natural deodorant brand is they tell you every ingredient in their products as well as WHY it is used. Some other things that make Tom’s of Maine so great is:

  • NO animal testing or animal ingredients.
  • NO artificial colors, flavors, fragrance, or preservatives.
  • All packaging is recyclable and try to use recycled materials when possible.
  • 5% of employee time goes to volunteering and 10% of profits to human and environmental goodness!

I think this is a pretty awesome company (and no, this isn’t a sponsored post).

Another business I would like to highlight is the fabulous Skin Food By AB!

SkinFoodByAB is an amazing small business on Etsy. I have been seeing her products buzz around on social media for months now. She has a variety of natural deodorant with different natural herbs, scents and probiotics! I will most definitely be ordering some of her natural deodorant very soon. You will see a couple of her products featured on my upcoming Going Natural Blog Series posts!
